Goodbye brat era, hello very demure

Move over Slay, there’s a new buzzword online…

“Very mindful, very demure,” is the latest Instagram and TikTok trend that consumers and brands alike are obsessed with. It sits on board the train that hosts Gen Z’s quiet luxury craze, suggesting that life should be handled with class and simplicity, and at the core of it all, not doing too much.

TikTok influencer Jools Lebron takes you through all aspects of your livelihood, from boarding a plane to drinking on the weekend, but most importantly, how to act at work. She propelled the term into the spotlight, skyrocketing her platform, and starting a series on how to embody the words demure, mindful, and cutesy. She explains how demure isn’t simply about appearance, but about confidence, how you carry yourself, and self-awareness.

It has a hint of irony and a mask of sarcasm that companies are grabbing a hold of, like Duolingo to joke about using vocabulary in everyday life or Woolworths to promote their “cutesy” products.

Posts tagged #demure have spiked 2k in the last 7 days in Australia alone, contributing to a whopping 231k videos globally. What does this mean for your brand?

It’s an easy-to-use trending sound that can be applied to all industries. It’s very simple – or very demure.

Beauty brands can showcase their natural beauty-based products, your office could make a fun video of employees lip-syncing, or a trade company with a high-risk project playing it off as gentle.
